A Platform, Not a Clamp

You come to full draw and the bow does something your hand was not expecting. It sits there, light and a little loose against your palm, and it feels like it might tip forward out of your grip and clatter to the floor. Everything in you wants to close around it. Wrap the fingers, tighten the thumb, take hold of this expensive thing before it gets away. So you squeeze. The picture looks fine through the sight, you let the shot go, and the arrow lands a hand's width to the side of where it should have. Not high, not low. Left, or right. You could swear you did everything right.
One honest caveat before going further: there is no single correct grip. Watch enough good shooters and each has settled on something a little their own, and the best coaches say the same, that it comes down to how the bow sits in your hand. What follows is not the one right way. It is the principle underneath all of them, the thing worth understanding before you go find your own version of it.
The loose grip is the point, and the squeeze is the error
That sideways miss is the grip talking. It is one of the first counterintuitions the sport hands you, and it is a stubborn one, because the fix runs directly against instinct. A correct grip is loose on purpose. The bow is supposed to rest low in the hand, down on the fleshy pad that runs along the lifeline toward the wrist, with the knuckles cocked at a relaxed angle and the fingers doing almost nothing at all. Held that way, the bow really can feel like it is barely held, like one good bump would send it sliding. The looseness is not a flaw you are tolerating. It is the whole point. And the squeeze, the very thing that feels like control, is the error.
A bow at release twists around whatever grabs it
Here is the mechanism, in plain terms. A bow at the moment of release is not a passive object. It comes alive, the stored energy snaps forward, and for a fraction of a second the riser wants to rotate around whatever is touching it. A relaxed open hand barely touches it, so it leaves the bow alone and the bow goes where it was pointed. A tight, wrapped fist touches it everywhere, and never quite evenly. One side of the hand presses a little harder than the other, the way any clenched grip does without your permission. That uneven pressure is torque, and the bow telegraphs it straight down the arrow as a twist to one side. You will never feel the twist in your hand. You will only ever see it in the target, off to the left or off to the right, and you will blame your aim. The harder you grab, the more the bow has to push against, and the more it talks back.
The answer to a slipping bow is friction, not a stronger hand
So the answer to a bow that feels like it is slipping is not a stronger hand. It is friction. If the worry is that the bow will squirt out of a loose grip, you fix that with a textured grip or a wrap of tape, even the cheap baseball-bat grip tape from a sporting-goods store, something that gives your skin a little purchase so the bow simply does not slide. Friction holds the bow in place without your muscles having to. That frees the hand to stay soft, which is the only state in which it stops adding torque. The rest of the arm follows the same logic. The bow elbow stays slightly bent rather than locked rigid, soft enough to absorb and not fight, rotated so the inside of the arm clears the path of the string. Low in the hand, relaxed in the fingers, a touch of bend at the elbow. You are not gripping the bow. You are giving it a steady place to leave from.
A tight grip feels like control and is usually destroying it
That is the part worth carrying out of the range, because the shape of it shows up far from any target. The instinct to grab harder when something feels like it is getting away from you is almost never the move. A tight grip feels like control and very often is the thing destroying it. The white-knuckle hold on a conversation that is drifting, the clamp-down on a plan that is wobbling, the squeeze you put on a person or a project the moment it seems unsteady. The pressure that is meant to keep things in line is usually what knocks them out of it, and you rarely feel yourself doing it. Stability does not come from a tighter fist. It comes from building a steady platform and then trusting it enough to keep your hand soft.
So go back to that bow sitting loose in your palm, light enough to feel like it is slipping. The job was never to take hold of it harder. The job is to give it a flat, quiet place to push off from and then let it. Drop it low on the lifeline, let the fingers go slack, add friction where you were tempted to add force, and leave a little give in the arm. The bow does not need to be held. It needs a platform. Hold it like a clamp and it will twist away from you every time, and never once tell you why.
